Exercise 2 Article
On December 17, 2021, a large typhoon No. 22 (Odette) made landfall and passed through the Philippines. It damaged Surigao Province and Cebu Island in the Philippines, disrupting lifelines and Internet communications, which have not yet been restored in many areas. Regions across the world, not only the Philippines, are experiencing frequent typhoons on an unprecedented scale.
In the Philippines, monoculture agriculture, the cultivation of one main cash crop, such as coconut or sugar cane is the main source of income. Therefore, when a huge typhoon strikes, people abandon their farming activities and become totally dependent on precarious sources of subsistence, such as food aid and migration to urban areas. The destruction of forests and trees is also exacerbating environmental problems such as soil erosion, landslides, reduced freshwater supplies, and loss of biodiversity. If left unchecked, not only will typhoon-stricken areas be unable to recover, but the same tragedy will likely reoccur in the future when another giant typhoon strikes. This is why agroforestry, an attempt to enhance adaptability to climate change, is being conducted in many areas.

What is agroforestry?
Agroforestry is a combination of agriculture and forestry, and refers to the cultivation of crops and the raising of livestock in the spaces between trees while planting and managing forests. It is mainly practiced in tropical regions and is also called “forest agriculture”. It is a land use method with the advantages of environmental conservation and social development.
HH&HJAPAN's Agroforestry Project
HH&HJapan has helped to increase biodiversity in the Philipines through conversion to agroforestry (AF) and reforestation in and around Tanawan City and Palo City in northern Leyte, which were severely damaged by Typhoon (Haiyan) 12 in November 2013. Our group has also increased the adaptability of coconut farmers to respond to changing conditions in the climate (please see website for more information).

2021年12月17日、フィリピンに大型台風22号（オデット）が上陸・通過しました。それによりフィリピンのスリガオ州やセブ島などが被災し、ライフラインやインターネット通信が寸断され、今も多くの地域で復旧できていません。世界では、フィリピンに限らず、未曾有の規模の台風が頻発しています。
フィリピンの農業は、ココナツやさとうきびなどの単作農業が主な収入源です。このため、巨大台風が襲来すると、人々は農業活動を放棄し、食糧援助や都市部への移住など、不安定な農外就業に全面的に依存することになります。また、森林や樹木の破壊は、土壌浸食、地滑り、淡水供給量の減少、生物多様性の損失などの環境問題を深刻化させることになります。そのまま放置すれば、台風被災地は復興できないばかりか、将来、再び巨大台風が襲来したときに、同じ悲劇を繰り返すことになることが予想されます。そこで、アグロフォレストリーという気候変動への適応力を高める試みが各地で行われています。

アグロフォレストリーとは？
アグロフォレストリーとは、農業と林業を組み合わせたもので、植林や森林管理を行いながら、樹木の間のスペースを利用して農作物の栽培や家畜の飼育を行うことを指します。主に熱帯地方で行われており、「森林農業」とも呼ばれます。環境保全と社会発展につながるという利点を持つ土地利用法です。
HH&HJAPANのアグロフォレストリー事業
HH&HJapanは、2013年11月の台風12号（ハイエン）で大きな被害を受けたレイテ島北東部のタナワン市およびパロ市周辺において、アグロフォレストリー（AF）への転換や植林による生物多様性の増加を通じて、ココナッツ農家と地域の環境の気候変動への適応力を高める活動を行ってきました(詳しくはウェブサイトをご覧ください)
